McGylnn wins 2019 Leo Molloy

Gerard McGlynn has added his name to the prestigious Leo Molloy Cup following a dramatic day of darts in Kilcar which seen Fermanagh’s Denise Cassidy throw brilliantly to become the first lady player to reach the final which finished 6-3 to the Glenfin thrower, Gerard hit a 13 dart leg while Denise had a 113 check out in the final in Kilcar House in front of a large attendance in the first round of the event Gerard defeated the holder Phil McGeehan 3-0. In the semi-finals Gerard beat Adrian Byrne who was the furthest SWDDL player to progress 5-0 while Denise won 5-4 against Derek Quinn. The four quarter finals were the best ever seen at this event in its 19 years with Gerard defeating Damien McGovern 5-2, Denise beating previous champion Charlie Grant 5-4, Adrian beating last year’s runner up Declan Cunningham  5-2 and Derek hit a 164 to win his match against Kieran Gallagher who was on a double 5-3. We had almost 60 throwers on the day which was great considering the All Ireland Youths and other events were on (hopefully their won’t be any tournaments clashing with next year’s event as it’s in memory of a great darts man) we hope see at least that entry for the 20th Leo Molloy next March where we hope to have an even bigger prize fund we gave out €1,400 in prize money this year and thanks to Heineken Ireland, Margaret Molloy, Una Blain and our board sponsors The Sim Clinic, Tuna.ie, David’s Cabs, Carrick Meats, Fusion Bistro and Sligo Aero Club for all you help and to all the players who entered and Kilcar House and John Joe’s for hosting the event.

It was 20 year ago in December past that Leo Molloy left us to soon so to mark that anniversary it would be great to see his old teammates, opponents etc at this year’s event. Since 2000 we have seen some of the biggest names in darts travel to Kilcar to play in the Leo Molloy Memorial Darts Tournament, Leo who was the first manager to manage Donegal to an All-Ireland title in 1998 Leo was well liked and respected in the world of darts and was heavily involved in the South West area with reforming the league in the early 1990s and helping to run tournaments including the famous Norman Blaine Competition which was one of the biggest in Ireland at the time, but he was sadly taken at a young age and this tournament is a fitting tribute to him as we prepare for the 19th hosting of this tournament .

PDC star Brendan Dolan has won this tournament four times while ex BDO player Martin McCloskey has won it three times, next on the list is John Menchia Gallagher. This year’s tournament promises to be one of the most competitive ever with the rise in talented youth players in the area mixed with players from the North West and beyond it promises to be a great day of darts.
